Han Wistar Rat, 92 weeks
Carcinogenicity study; Large mass on dorsal forelimb in control animal; vimentin +ve, actin, desmin and S100 –ve; PTAH -ve

This is an unencapsulated subcutaneous expansile mass infiltrating muscle. It is very cellular consisting of spindle shaped cells with an indistinct eosinophilic cytoplasm with a criss-crossing pattern of growth and a high mitotic rate. There are areas of necrosis.

The interstitial material appears to be collagen. There is no evidence of muscle differentiation. The lack of a storiform pattern of growth and giant cells tends to exclude malignant fibrous histiocytoma.
